1. Accountability Through Transparency
When people can see what everyone else is doing, we are all drawn to produce and share our best possible work. This holds us all accountable to each other, and to our shared sense of what is best, through an open line of communication between agency, staff, and families. Wherever possible, we use inclusion (the 4th value) to help clarify actions and expectations, so that unfounded assumptions are limited, and we can encourage each other towards excellence (5th value).

“Fairness” is a sense of “balance” or equality between different people and their respective rights, values, choices, and actions. This relies on a sense of honesty and trust (the 1st value), and may entail trade-offs, negotiation, changes in expectations, and the freedom to go beyond roles and rules. Every interaction – between agency, staff, clients, and the larger community – should be experienced as a “Win-Win”, where all parties perceive benefit from the exchange.

3. Interdependency Towards Synergy
We believe the developmental process starts with dependency, then independence, and matures into interdependency — a mutual reliance on each other for our survival and success. Synergy is the recognition that working collaboratively, we can all do much better than working alone; that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. By creating trust and safety, and the use of open honest communication, we strive for authentic communication and maximized benefit from this shared interaction.

We nurture personal commitment, investment, and ownership by encouraging people (agency, staff, and clients) to become fully involved, take responsibility, and become committed to all levels of interaction. This includes valuing and making space for the “voice and choice” of others in everything we do. Through this involvement, a sense of belonging grows, promoting our personal best (5th value), and fostering interdependency and synergy (3rd value).

Once basic needs are met (values 2, 3, and 8), each person is free to strive for personal mastery; in their work, their relationships, their family, and their personal life. We believe that each person is capable of continuous improvement or progress towards their best, and we actively seek and remove barriers that limit personal growth for self and others. We recognize that “Total Quality” is an ideal, illusive and difficult to maintain. As such, we are always rediscovering and learning more about what would constitute “Total Quality” in our work, and striving for this level of excellence. We know that every service is intended to make a positive difference in the lives of the people we serve, and that every person deserves to live a good life with peace, choice, friends, and success.

Each service provider in Pivot Point is guided by “Best Practices” as defined by what “the best workers in one’s field” perceive as the standards of practice for that line of work. Typically, this entails using treatment approaches that have been proven effective through research; being truly client and culture centered; incorporating multiple viewpoints from multiple disciplines; sharing with and trusting in other professionals (1st value); and seeking ways to build a more effective team (3rd value). Through this value of Collaborative Practice each service provider can fully embrace the process of group determination; of co-authoring a truly holistic and comprehensive plan tailored to the current experiences of each client family.

Because Self, Family, and Community are interdependent, to thrive they must work together. Strong people create strong families, which in turn build strong communities, which in turn inspire and sustain individuals in being at their best. This is the “circle of life” for all of us living in community. As such, we believe that taking responsibility (4th value) for one’s own quest for personal mastery (5th value) will create the environment necessary for each of us to succeed: A community that is responsive, resilient, and nurturing of us all.

8. Compassion for Imperfection
For ‘trial and error’ to be an effective teaching tool (as arguably the only method of helping individuals and teams rise above mediocrity), people must feel free to make mistakes. This freedom is created when people are accepting and forgiving of themselves and others when mistakes are made. It also entails supporting each other so that we may all learn from each others’ mistakes. Through this we create the environment of a ‘Learning Organization’, where individuals, teams and the agency can learn and learn about how we learn to amass wisdom beyond the knowledge of any one individual (3rd value).
